A Defense Contractor
Codio enables a leading defense-sector cyber training program to deliver a scalable, behavior-rich coding environments to its learners—replacing manual grading with instant, automated feedback, and deep learning analytics
Requirements
Before adopting Codio, the program faced three core challenges in delivering cyber education at scale:
- Automated Grading & Instant Feedback: The program lacked testing suites capable of grading student submissions automatically and providing immediate, actionable feedback.
- Behavior Analytics: Customers required visibility into the coding process—not just final results—to demonstrate how learners approached problems.
- Environment Control: Instructors needed the ability to create and control distinct coding environments tailored to specific customer and mission requirements.

Background
This organization runs a fast-growing cyber education and training program serving learners in the government and defense sectors. Prior to Codio, the tech stack relied on an LMS, custom in-house tooling, and manual grading workflows. The limitations were significant: slow feedback cycles, impossible scalability as enrollment grew, and no way to prove how students arrived at their answers—a critical requirement for their customer base..png?width=671&height=358&name=getty-images-ZadtE16oVic-unsplash%201%20(1).png)

Teaching with Codio
Today, Codio powers daily assignments, assessments, and cyber range exercises across the program. The typical workflow:
-
Student view: Assignment → Check/Submission → Auto-grading → Instant Feedback
-
Instructor view: Creation → Assignment → Live Observation → Analysis → Report → Revision
Instructors now offer learners a configurable "menu" of assignment options — toggling LLM usage, application inclusion, timers, keylogging, and live observation — tailored to specific training objectives. After adopting Codio:
- Instructors gained immediate insight into student blockers and remediation points
- A deeper understanding of the learning process replaced surface-level outcome tracking
- Customer reporting improved with more honest, evidence-based feedback on student progress
The most valued capabilities: auto-grading, learner insights, and Cyber Range.

Working with Codio
"Amazing — the Codio staff is knowledgeable and willing to solve unique problems. The team has been patient, willing to train, and even created new workarounds for our specific blockers."
The "blockers" here refer to the program's unique operational and security requirements — not platform limitations — reflecting how closely Codio's team engaged with their specific mission context.

Going Forward
The program currently uses Codio for 4 of its 17 training weeks, with a roadmap to expand to the full 17-week curriculum by 2028—positioning Codio as the principal development platform for the entire program.
